Our farm cultivates 348 banana plants of the "Gros Michel" variety. Gros Michel is a popular banana variety known for its delicious taste, and was produced in Japan (including Okinawa) until the mid-Showa era. However, in the 1950s, most Gros Michel plants, lacking resistance to Panama disease, withered and died, and it disappeared from Japan. Around 2016, virus-free seedlings became available, making cultivation possible again. This variety has come to be known as a miracle variety. The characteristics of this variety are its elegant sweetness and aroma, and just the right amount of acidity. Our farm cultivates the bananas without using any pesticides during the growing season. Therefore, we have to deal with insect control and diseases all year round. However, our greenhouse has various features, and we have introduced ICT (Information and Communication Technology), which allows us to remotely control greenhouse equipment such as ventilation and watering from our smartphones, even when we are away from home. This has allowed us to take measures against diseases and other problems more quickly, which has been a great help to us farmers.
